Empathy Coin Stash

Empathy Coin Stash

Empathy Coin stash is an innovative furniture design piece that exemplifies the intersection of cultural understanding and functional design, created by Singapore-based designer Brandon Yeo. This thoughtfully crafted coin bank, standing at 250mm in height and 100mm in width, incorporates a unique dual-chamber system that physically manifests the concept of charitable giving inspired by the Islamic principle of Zakat. The design features a sophisticated combination of materials, including ABS plastic, brass, and glass, with a metal-stamped concave brass top and an extruded ABS body. The distinctive feature of this design lies in its intelligent separation mechanism, where coins are divided between an opaque personal savings area and a transparent glass dome designated for charitable contributions. The design's ingenuity is particularly evident in its behavioral aspect - once the personal savings chamber reaches capacity, subsequent coins automatically fall into the charitable section, embodying the principle that giving becomes possible after achieving personal sufficiency. The construction showcases meticulous attention to detail, featuring a precision-lathed brass separator with screw threading and a rubber washer for secure attachment to the glass bowl. This design, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, represents a significant contribution to contemporary furniture design by incorporating cultural sensitivity, functional innovation, and meaningful social commentary into a single cohesive piece.
