Elytra Space Saver Coffee Table

Elytra Space Saver Coffee Table

Elytra Space Saver Coffee Table is an innovative biomimetic furniture design that draws inspiration from the wing mechanism of beetles, specifically their elytra (wing covers). Created by Indian designer Radhika Dhumal, this dynamic coffee table represents a sophisticated fusion of natural inspiration and functional design, featuring a transformable surface that can expand to accommodate additional items. The table's design comprises four distinct sections: a wooden head, a body, and two glass-inlay wings that can be simultaneously extended to increase the usable surface area. In its standard configuration, the table measures 450mm x 750mm x 475mm, but when the wings are fully extended, the width expands to 1180mm, offering significantly more surface area for items such as beverages, plants, or reading materials. The table's construction involves precision-engineered components, crafted through CNC-cut teak wood, resulting in a seamless kinetic mechanism that enables smooth transformation. The design's rounded forms and distinctive four-legged stance contribute to its animal-like aesthetic, while its functionality addresses the contemporary need for space-efficient furniture solutions in modern living spaces. This innovative design earned recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, acknowledging its exceptional blend of aesthetic appeal, functionality, and biomimetic innovation. The development process involved extensive preliminary sketching and prototype testing using laser-cut MDF models to perfect the kinetic mechanism before the final realization in teak wood, demonstrating a methodical approach to design development and implementation.
