Elena Del Rivero

Elena Del Rivero is a Spanish artist whose work defies categorization, blending elements of painting, sculpture, and installation art. Her large-scale abstract works often incorporate everyday materials such as paper, thread, and fabric, and are characterized by a unique approach to color, texture, and form. Del Rivero's art is deeply personal, reflecting her experiences as a woman and an immigrant, and often explores themes of memory, identity, and language. Born in Valencia, Spain in 1949, Del Rivero studied art in Madrid before moving to New York City in 1985. Her early work was influenced by the minimalist and conceptual art movements of the 1960s and 70s, but she soon developed a distinctive style that was all her own. Over the course of her career, Del Rivero has exhibited her work in galleries and museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Venice Biennale, and the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid. One of Del Rivero's most notable works is The Transparent Thread, a series of large-scale installations that she began in 2001 in response to the September 11th attacks. The works consist of delicate threads of silk and cotton suspended from the ceiling, which form intricate webs that seem to float in mid-air. The threads are inscribed with fragments of text, including quotes from poetry, literature, and philosophy, as well as personal memories and observations. The effect is both ethereal and haunting, evoking the fragility of human life and the power of language to connect and inspire.
