Electro-optical Couplers
Electro-optical couplers, also known as optocouplers or photocouplers, are electronic devices used to transfer electrical signals between two isolated circuits using light. They consist of an LED (light-emitting diode) and a photodetector, usually a phototransistor or a photodiode, housed in a single package. The LED emits light when a voltage is applied to it, which is then detected by the photodetector and converted back into an electrical signal. The two circuits are physically separated by a transparent insulating material, such as plastic or glass, which prevents any direct electrical connection between them. Electro-optical couplers are commonly used in applications where electrical isolation is required to protect sensitive components or circuits from high voltages or currents. They are also used to eliminate ground loops, reduce electromagnetic interference, and provide galvanic isolation between two circuits. Some examples of applications include power supplies, motor control, audio amplifiers, and medical equipment. One of the main advantages of electro-optical couplers is their high isolation voltage, which can range from a few hundred volts to several thousand volts. They also have a fast response time, typically in the range of a few microseconds, and are immune to electromagnetic interference. However, they have some limitations, such as limited bandwidth, temperature sensitivity, and non-linearity. In summary, electro-optical couplers are electronic devices that use light to transfer electrical signals between two isolated circuits. They are widely used in applications where electrical isolation is required to protect sensitive components or circuits from high voltages or currents, and to eliminate ground loops and reduce electromagnetic interference.
