Electrical Surge Arrestors
Electrical surge arrestors, also known as surge protectors or lightning arrestors, are devices designed to protect electrical equipment from voltage spikes, surges, and transients. These voltage fluctuations can be caused by lightning strikes, power outages, or other electrical disturbances, and can damage or destroy sensitive electronic equipment such as computers, televisions, and other appliances. Surge arrestors work by diverting excess voltage away from the equipment they are protecting and dissipating it harmlessly into the ground. They typically consist of a metal oxide varistor (MOV) or gas discharge tube (GDT) connected between the power line and ground. When a voltage surge occurs, the MOV or GDT conducts the excess voltage to ground, preventing it from reaching the equipment. There are several types of surge arrestors available, including whole-house surge protectors, plug-in surge protectors, and surge protector power strips. Whole-house surge protectors are installed at the main electrical panel and protect all the electrical equipment in the house. Plug-in surge protectors are designed to be plugged into a wall outlet and protect individual devices. Surge protector power strips are similar to plug-in surge protectors, but also provide multiple outlets for connecting several devices. In addition to protecting equipment from voltage surges, surge arrestors can also improve the overall reliability and lifespan of electrical equipment by reducing wear and tear on components caused by voltage fluctuations. They are an essential component of any modern electrical system and are widely used in residential, commercial, and industrial applications.
