Electrical Phonograph Record Turntable Cartridges
An electrical phonograph record turntable cartridge, commonly referred to as a phonograph cartridge or simply a cartridge, is a device that converts the mechanical vibrations of a record groove into an electrical signal that can be amplified and played through speakers. The cartridge is mounted onto the tonearm of a turntable and contains a stylus that tracks the grooves of the record and a transducer that converts the mechanical vibrations into an electrical signal. The stylus is the part of the cartridge that physically contacts the record groove. It is typically made of diamond or other hard materials and is designed to track the groove without damaging it. The transducer is usually a magnetic or piezoelectric element that converts the mechanical vibrations into an electrical signal. The electrical signal is then sent through the tonearm and into the phono preamp, where it is amplified and equalized before being sent to the speakers. There are two main types of cartridges: moving magnet (MM) and moving coil (MC). MM cartridges have a magnet that moves with the stylus and generates the electrical signal, while MC cartridges have a coil that moves with the stylus and generates the signal. MC cartridges are generally considered to be higher quality and more expensive than MM cartridges, but they require a specialized phono preamp that can handle the low output voltage. In addition to the type of cartridge, there are also different shapes and sizes of stylus tips, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The most common shapes are conical, elliptical, and microline. Conical stylus tips are the most durable but have lower fidelity, while elliptical and microline tips have higher fidelity but are more fragile and require more careful handling. Overall, the choice of cartridge and stylus depends on the listener's preferences and the quality of the turntable and audio system. A high-quality cartridge and stylus can significantly improve the sound quality of a vinyl record, making it a worthwhile investment for audiophiles.
