El_Masnad Lounge Carpet

El_Masnad Lounge Carpet is an innovative furniture design that revolutionizes traditional Middle Eastern seating concepts by reimagining the relationship between users and floor-based living spaces. This groundbreaking design, created by Saudi Arabian designer Sana Alabdulwahed, masterfully integrates cultural heritage with contemporary functionality through its unique approach to armrest-centric seating. The design consists of soft, geometrically complex forms that can be arranged in various configurations, measuring 335cm x 180cm x 30cm for a single set of two pieces, or 470cm x 180cm x 30cm for a complete four-piece arrangement. Utilizing advanced manufacturing techniques including 5-axis hot wire milling for foam filling and CNC stitching on felt, the design employs contemporary materials while paying homage to traditional carpet-rolling techniques. The innovative use of felt as a modern alternative to traditional wool carpets demonstrates a thoughtful evolution of cultural materials. The design's non-directional layout accommodates modern technology usage patterns, while its low profile creates an enhanced sense of spatial height. El_Masnad's irregular polygonal forms, derived from traditional armrest outlines, reflect Arab appreciation for complex geometric patterns while facilitating intuitive social interaction through their interlocking arrangement. This Silver A' Design Award-winning creation stands out for its cultural sensitivity, innovative material application, and user-centered approach to contemporary living spaces, particularly resonating with Middle Eastern leisure culture and spatial preferences. The design successfully addresses modern lifestyle needs while maintaining strong cultural connections, allowing for organic emergence of various sitting positions and social configurations.
