EeGee Stay: Reviving The Local Economy Local Capsule Hotel
eeGee Stay: Reviving the Local Economy Local Capsule Hotel is an innovative architectural renovation project that transforms a vacant building into a sustainable capsule hotel, addressing two significant social challenges in contemporary Japan: urban vacancy and declining local economies. Designed by Hajime Tsuruta, this Bronze A' Design Award-winning project reimagines the traditional capsule hotel concept through a nature-inspired design approach, featuring 306 wooden sleeping cabins (152 for women and 154 for men) arranged in an alternating pattern across two floors, spanning 1,942 square meters. The design deliberately departs from conventional plastic-based capsule hotels by incorporating organic materials and creating an urban forest aesthetic, where guests sleep in treehouse-like wooden cabins rather than synthetic pods. This thoughtful renovation project, completed in 2019, embodies principles of sustainable architecture and social responsibility by utilizing existing infrastructure and promoting local economic revitalization. The hotel's minimalist amenities strategy intentionally encourages guests to patronize neighboring businesses within the shopping arcade, fostering a symbiotic relationship between the accommodation and local commerce. The design features ergonomically optimized sleeping cabins with custom-designed mattresses and carefully engineered access ladders, while the irregular ceiling patterns and offset cabin arrangements create visual interest and maximize space utilization. This project represents a significant innovation in hospitality design, demonstrating how architectural interventions can address broader socioeconomic challenges while creating comfortable, aesthetically pleasing spaces that contribute to urban renewal.
