EcoPuzzle Puzzle Book is an innovative, eco-friendly educational toy that combines the cognitive benefits of puzzle-solving with environmental awareness and sustainability. Designed by Italian designer Giulia Messori, this groundbreaking product represents a significant advancement in sustainable toy design, crafted entirely from Mater-Bi®, a fully compostable bioplastic material that complies with UNI EN 13432 standards. The design features a unique dual-functionality concept where the puzzle pieces, printed with water-based colors, are integrated into a book format measuring 195mm x 180mm, with varying thicknesses for different editions. Each puzzle piece contains flower seeds sandwiched between two layers, enabling children to plant the pieces after use, transforming the toy into living flowers. The innovative production process involves water-color printing on Mater-Bi® film coupled with extruded leaves, incorporating a flowered carpet of seeds secured with non-toxic Coccoina® adhesive. This educational tool serves multiple developmental purposes, stimulating psycho-social development, enhancing manual dexterity, and fostering environmental consciousness among young users. The design, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design category, exemplifies the integration of sustainable materials, educational value, and innovative product lifecycle consideration. The puzzle book's design allows for both family and kindergarten usage, offering an engaging way to combine play with environmental education while ensuring zero waste through its completely biodegradable composition.
