Ecliptic
Ecliptic is the apparent path that the Sun traces out in the celestial sphere over the course of a year, as seen from the perspective of Earth. This imaginary line is formed by the intersection of Earth's orbital plane with the celestial sphere, and it serves as a fundamental reference for various astronomical measurements and observations. The ecliptic is tilted at an angle of approximately 23.5 degrees relative to the celestial equator, a result of Earth's axial tilt. This tilt gives rise to the seasonal variations experienced on Earth, as the Sun's position along the ecliptic changes throughout the year. The ecliptic is divided into 12 equal segments, each corresponding to a specific constellation, forming the basis of the zodiac. These constellations, often associated with astrological signs, are the backdrop against which the Sun, Moon, and planets appear to move from Earth's viewpoint. The Moon and planets also follow paths close to the ecliptic, with the Moon's orbit inclined about 5 degrees to the ecliptic, and the planets deviating by no more than 8 degrees. The points where the ecliptic intersects with the celestial equator are known as the equinoxes – the vernal equinox and the autumnal equinox – marking the beginning of spring and fall, respectively, in the Northern Hemisphere. Similarly, the points of maximum deviation of the ecliptic from the celestial equator are called the solstices – the summer solstice and the winter solstice – indicating the start of summer and winter. Understanding the ecliptic is crucial for tracking the apparent motion of celestial bodies, predicting astronomical events like eclipses, and comprehending the cyclical nature of seasons on Earth.
