Eastern Seawall Signage System And Environmental Graphic

Eastern Seawall Signage System and Environmental Graphic is an innovative wayfinding and environmental graphic design solution implemented along the 32-kilometer shoreline of Dapeng Peninsula, connecting six distinct coastal areas through a unified visual language. This comprehensive signage system, designed by Yi Zhang and team, represents a sophisticated approach to integrating informational infrastructure within natural environments while prioritizing both functionality and aesthetic harmony. The design employs modular structures featuring anti-corrosion Merbau hardwood and 10mm steel skeleton cross bracing, specifically engineered to withstand challenging coastal conditions including typhoons, high salinity, and elevated humidity levels. The system's primary concept of reading on the way transforms the visitor experience by seamlessly incorporating signboards, site maps, and ecological information along roads and entrances, creating an engaging narrative journey through the landscape. The design's technical innovation is evident in its compact structural elements that reduce wind loads while maintaining durability, complemented by permanent poles that eliminate common maintenance issues associated with traditional metal fasteners. This Silver A' Design Award-winning project demonstrates exceptional achievement in environmental graphic design, successfully addressing the complex challenges of coastal infrastructure while enhancing public space functionality. The system's implementation has effectively transformed an underutilized coastal pathway into a vibrant public space that supports both tourism and environmental protection, featuring interactive ground graphics and clear directional elements that guide visitors through various terrains including seawalls, steps, slopes, and reefs.
