Dry Cleaning Fluids

Dry cleaning fluids are chemical solvents used in the dry cleaning process to remove stains and dirt from clothing and other fabrics. Unlike traditional washing methods that use water and detergent, dry cleaning fluids are designed to dissolve and remove stains without saturating the fabric with water. This is particularly useful for delicate fabrics that cannot withstand the harsh agitation of a washing machine or the high temperatures of a dryer. The most commonly used dry cleaning fluid is perchloroethylene (also known as tetrachloroethylene or perc), a colorless liquid that has a slightly sweet odor. Perc is a highly effective solvent that can dissolve a wide range of stains, including grease, oil, and dirt. It is also nonflammable and noncombustible, making it a safe choice for use in dry cleaning machines. Other dry cleaning fluids include hydrocarbon solvents, which are less toxic than perc and have a milder odor. These solvents are often used as a more environmentally friendly alternative to perc. However, they are not as effective at removing certain types of stains and may require longer cleaning times. While dry cleaning fluids are generally safe when used properly, they can pose health risks if they are not handled correctly. Exposure to high levels of perc can cause dizziness, headaches, and nausea, and prolonged exposure can lead to more serious health problems. For this reason, dry cleaning facilities must follow strict safety guidelines to ensure that their employees and customers are not exposed to harmful levels of these chemicals.
