Dragon Restaurant is an innovative underground dining establishment located within a Financial Tech office building in Beijing, exemplifying a harmonious fusion between technological advancement and natural elements. Designed by Zhenhua Luo and team during 2019-2020, this 2500-square-meter space masterfully addresses the challenge of creating an inviting atmosphere in a predominantly subterranean setting where 80% of the dining area lacks natural light. The restaurant's distinctive design philosophy centers on simulating natural elements through advanced digital technology, featuring a striking digital waterfall and pool installation complete with copper duckling sculptures that create an illusion of swimming. The design team ingeniously incorporated cast concrete techniques to achieve these naturalistic effects, while private dining rooms are thoughtfully designed to evoke the essence of valleys, incorporating diverse plant life and seasonal variations despite the absence of windows. This sophisticated approach to interior architecture demonstrates an exceptional understanding of spatial dynamics and environmental psychology, particularly relevant in Beijing's climate where outdoor water features are impractical due to long, cold winters. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2021, showcases an innovative solution to contemporary urban dining spaces, successfully creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere that transcends its subterranean limitations through the creative application of digital technology and biophilic design principles.
