Disco-Volante Coffee Table

Disco-Volante Coffee Table

Disco-Volante Coffee Table is an innovative furniture design piece created by Australian designer Simon Colabufalo that revolutionizes the traditional concept of coffee tables through its unique modular composition. Drawing inspiration from the organic forms of lily pads, this avant-garde table design features multiple pods of varying heights, sizes, and colors, departing from conventional single-surface coffee table designs. Crafted from polished aluminum and acrylic materials, the table's dimensions measure 733 x 1500 x 403 millimeters, creating a dynamic multi-level surface that encourages novel user interactions. The incorporation of translucent colored plastic elements produces captivating colored shadows, adding an artistic dimension to its functional purpose. The design's thoughtful consideration of common coffee table items with small footprints, such as glassware, remote controls, and reading materials, allows for practical usability despite its unconventional form. The table's innovative approach to furniture design earned it the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, recognizing its exceptional blend of artistic vision and functional practicality. This recognition from one of the world's most esteemed design competitions validates the table's significant contribution to contemporary furniture design, particularly in its exploration of material combinations and spatial relationships. The Disco-Volante's development, spanning from 2009 to 2011 in Melbourne, culminated in its exhibition at DesignEX 2012, marking it as a significant milestone in modern furniture design innovation.
