Device Of Perception Cultural Center
Device of Perception Cultural Center is an innovative architectural project located in Mexico City that serves as a cultural nexus between the city's colonial historic quarter and modern commercial district. Situated adjacent to Zarco Plaza, this 4,500-square-meter facility represents a sophisticated interpretation of urban context and cultural narrative through architectural design. The structure, conceived by architect Yuting Zhang, employs a distinctive spiral pathway design that creates multiple perspectives of the cityscape, effectively functioning as both an exhibition space and an architectural device for perceiving Mexico City's rich historical and cultural legacy. The building's design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, draws inspiration from Aldo Rossi's 1978 Small Scientific Theatre project, exploring the relationship between architecture, image, and theatrical space. Constructed using reinforced concrete with board-marked walls and weathering Corten steel, the center embodies a dialogue between past, present, and future through its materiality. The facility features a sunken entrance plaza that provides a tranquil transition from the bustling La Reforma Avenue, while its innovative design includes two auditoriums, exhibition spaces, offices, storage facilities, and a café. Each floor of the short tower rotates a quarter turn, creating a spiral public gallery that extends the interior exhibition space outward. This architectural composition enables visitors to experience the city's historical layers through carefully framed viewpoints and breaking points in the cube of the spiral path, while the exterior plaza functions as an extension of the interior stage, creating a dual perception of space and culture.
