Design Of Vascular Ports
Vascular ports, also known as port-a-caths or simply ports, are medical devices that are implanted beneath the skin for frequent and long-term access to the venous system. They serve as an alternative to repeated peripheral IV insertions and reduce the need for multiple needle sticks. A typical port is made up of three components: the portal housing, catheter, and reservoir. Designing an effective vascular port requires paying attention to several criteria. Firstly, the portal housing should have a low profile and be made of a biocompatible material that doesn't irritate the surrounding tissue. Smooth edges should be incorporated to prevent friction and minimize the chances of infection. Secondly, the catheter should be flexible, kink-resistant, and have small inner and outer diameters to minimize dead space and blood clot formation. The catheter and reservoir should be both magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) compatible. Thirdly, the reservoir should have a self-sealing septum that can withstand frequent punctures and be accessed with minimal discomfort. Finally, the port should have a clear marking to indicate its purpose and placement, needle size, and date of insertion or last used. In addition to these design criteria, the position of the port should also be individualized to the patient's anatomy, particularly the vessel being accessed. The placement should allow for easy access while minimizing the risk of dislodgement or mechanical obstruction. To achieve this, collaboration between the surgeon, radiologist, and patient is essential. Overall, an effective vascular port design should prioritize the patient's comfort, ease of use, and minimal complications to ensure its success in clinical practice.
