Design Of De-aerators For Feedwater

A De-aerator is a mechanical device used in thermal power plants to remove dissolved oxygen and other gases from feedwater used for the production of steam. The De-aerator works by using a heating element, which prevents any vapor from forming while increasing the solubility of oxygen, allowing it to be readily released from the water. The gas-free water is then introduced back into the steam generator or boiler, where it helps to prevent corrosion damage to the plant's internal components. To design a high-quality De-aerator, certain critical factors must be considered. Firstly, the design must ensure that sufficient degassing of dissolved oxygen and other gases is achieved; this can be achieved by optimizing the diameter and height of the De-aerator to promote the longest possible residence time of gases within the water. Secondly, the inlet and outlet design of the device must be designed to avoid any sudden changes of direction which could cause turbulence and the re-introduction of unwanted gases. Third, the material of construction should be selected with care to provide the necessary durability, corrosion resistance, and long service life of the De-aerator. Fourthly, consideration should be given to the functioning of the device in various environmental conditions (pressure, temperature, humidity) to ensure optimal functionality throughout the life cycle of the De-aerator. Lastly, providing suitable automatic control systems with a safety interlock system would help to improve the overall performance and safety of the De-aerator.
