Design Contest

A design contest is an event where designers submit their work or projects to compete for recognition or prizes. These competitions are organized by companies, institutions, or other organizations worldwide. Participants in these challenges compete to create designs based on a certain set of criteria, which could be for disciplines such as architecture, product design, web design, fashion, graphic design, or even illustration. Design contests are different from design awards, as they do not provide prestige or fame, but they are good for young designers as a way to develop their portfolio. Design contests are mostly organized in a way that creates ethical problems because in most cases, the systems are designed such a way to make it easy to get over inspired from ideas of other participants. This is because in most design contests, participants could see submissions of others while the submissions are still ongoing. Furthermore, organizers comment on the submissions indicating preferences and likes, thus other participants could see the feedbacks and change their designs accordingly. The lack of jury, trivial compensation, and lack of respect to designers resulted in design contests being marked as speculative events. However, design contests are still popular among designers as they provide a very specific brief, teaching the industrial and technical design requirements, and designers will thus come up with realistic solutions. Design contests are a way to crowdsource design in a very efficient manner. Submissions are always digital, and usually, a single image of a concept or proposal is required. There are many design contest platforms available to organize such events, making it easier for companies or individuals to procure designs in a very cheap way. The sole incentives provided to participants are trivial payments, but winning a design contest could lead to future opportunities and recognition.
