Dan Sultan Magnetic Music Video is a groundbreaking multimedia production that masterfully combines multiple cutting-edge technologies to create an innovative music video experience. Created by director Jonathan Chong and his team, this technically sophisticated work features a sculptural bust of musician Dan Sultan that transforms throughout the performance, utilizing a hybrid approach of 3D printing, projection mapping, stop-motion animation, and 3D computer graphics. The production process began with creating a detailed 3D scan of the musician's head and face, which was then transformed into a 30-centimeter-high bust with interchangeable components for facial expressions. The project employed five simultaneous 3D printers to produce over 60 individual pieces, including 11 distinct phonemes for precise lip synchronization. Shot in 1080p HD using a Canon 5D MkII camera and requiring two months of meticulous production, the video captured over 2,700 individual photographs to achieve its seamless stop-motion effect. The technical complexity of the project demanded innovative solutions, such as implementing a ball-and-socket joint mechanism for the head movements and utilizing magnets for easily interchangeable mouth pieces. The video, which runs for 3 minutes and 45 seconds, demonstrates exceptional artistic merit through its transformation of the sculptural bust into a living work of art, earning it the Platinum A' Design Award in the Movie, Video and Animation Design category in 2017, recognizing its outstanding contribution to advancing the boundaries of multimedia design and animation techniques.
