Current Transformers

Current transformers, also known as CTs, are electrical devices used to measure the current flowing in a circuit. They are commonly used in power systems to measure the current flowing through high-voltage transmission lines, as well as in industrial applications to measure the current flowing through large motors and other equipment. The basic principle of a current transformer is to transform the high current flowing through a primary conductor into a lower current that can be safely measured by a secondary instrument. The primary conductor is passed through the center of the CT, which consists of a core made of laminated magnetic material. The secondary winding is wound around the core and connected to a measuring instrument, such as an ammeter or a protective relay. One of the key advantages of current transformers is their ability to isolate the measuring instrument from the high voltage and high current of the primary circuit. This allows the instrument to be located at a safe distance from the primary circuit, reducing the risk of electrical shock or damage to the instrument. Current transformers are available in a wide range of sizes and configurations to suit different applications. They can be designed for indoor or outdoor use, and can be installed on a variety of primary conductors, including overhead lines, underground cables, and busbars. In summary, current transformers are essential components in many electrical systems, providing a safe and accurate means of measuring current in high-voltage and high-current circuits.
