This groundbreaking design, created by Leung Jia Jun and Weng Yi Xiang, addresses the significant waste generated by fruit juice extraction while introducing a novel material solution for luxury accessories. The handbag undergoes a sophisticated four-stage production process: mechanical dehydration at 150 degrees Celsius for 45 minutes, precise cutting, strategic assembly in herringbone and vertical patterns, and traditional leather stitching techniques. Measuring 300mm x 150mm x 500mm, the bag showcases the inherent pliability and durability of processed orange peels while maintaining their natural pleasant aroma. The preservation method, achieved through mechanical dehydration, effectively eliminates decomposition concerns while transforming the material's aesthetic properties, resulting in a darkened, leather-like finish. This innovative approach to sustainable luxury, developed in Singapore during 2016, challenges conventional perceptions of waste materials in premium product design. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design category, demonstrates the potential for transforming organic waste into high-value consumer goods while promoting environmental consciousness in the fashion industry.
