Crafts on Peel Creative and Experiential Venue is a meticulously renovated three-story tenement building from 1948, transformed into a contemporary creative space that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of historical preservation and modern functionality. This innovative architectural intervention, designed by Annette Pui Man Chu, serves as a multipurpose venue dedicated to the revival and reinterpretation of traditional crafts in a contemporary context. The 120-square-meter space features distinctive architectural elements, including exposed brick walls strengthened through an innovative terrazzo technique utilizing recycled brick fragments mixed with white cement. The design incorporates full-height oxidized steel posts with adjustable display shelves, creating a flexible exhibition environment that adapts to various needs. Notable architectural features include the preservation of original elements such as plaster moldings, timber windows, and concrete columns, juxtaposed with modern interventions like stainless steel display shelves that double as structural supports. The building's exterior maintains its historical character with white paint featuring fine horizontal textures and revolving windows reminiscent of 1940-50s fenestration designs. The second floor houses an artisan-in-residence studio, modeled after traditional accommodation with an elevated bed platform, facilitating a unique live-work environment for young apprentices. This exemplary architectural renovation project, which earned recognition at the A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to historical preservation while creating a contemporary space that serves multiple functions including exhibitions, workshops, and experiential retail opportunities.
