Crab Houses Multifuncional complex is an innovative architectural project designed to serve as a research center and creative hub, situated in the picturesque town of Sobotka within the Silesian Lowlands of Poland. This avant-garde complex, conceived by architects Dagmara Oliwa and Anita Luniak, comprises three futuristic pavilions strategically positioned on meadowlands ascending toward the summit of Wiezyca, creating a harmonious bridge between urban infrastructure and natural surroundings. The design, which earned a Golden A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, draws its distinctive inspiration from the organic form of crabs traversing through rippling grass, featuring a research laboratory-workshop and two residential buildings constructed using laminated timber and steel, with innovative transparent glass fiber laminate panels manufactured through CNC technology. The complex incorporates sustainable technologies including recuperators, heat pumps, and photovoltaic cells, while its nighttime illumination creates a mesmerizing firefly-like effect over the town. The research laboratory measures 16.5m in length, 14.4m in width, and varies in height from 3.1m to 7.3m, while the residential building spans 13.75m in length, 12m in width, with heights ranging from 2.6m to 6.1m. This multifunctional facility is designed to foster collaboration between scientists, artists, and local community members, offering creative workshops for youth and providing accommodation for visiting professionals, ultimately serving as a catalyst for urban revitalization and cultural development in the region.
