Cover[t] Ash Tray

cover[t] Ash Tray is an innovative urban design solution that reimagines traditional street drainage infrastructure by integrating an ash tray functionality into conventional drain covers, created by designers Keizo Okamoto and Tsutomu Deguchi. This social design intervention, measuring 840 mm x 540 mm x 60 mm for the drain cover and 840 mm x 540 mm x 80 mm for the ash tray component, represents a thoughtful response to Beijing's smoking regulations and local behavioral patterns. Constructed from 3 mm laser-cut metal plate with baking paint for the cover and 3mm perforated stainless steel for the bottom, this design exemplifies a passive approach to behavioral modification in urban environments. The project, which emerged from extensive research following Beijing's implementation of new smoking policies, acknowledges the distinct behavioral patterns between CBD workers and residents of traditional Hutong neighborhoods. Rather than forcing behavioral change, the design adapts to existing habits by transforming common street fixtures into functional ash receptacles, effectively improving public cleanliness while respecting established cultural practices. This innovative approach to street furniture design, which was recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category, demonstrates how subtle design interventions can address social challenges without disrupting community behaviors. The project, completed between July and October 2015, represents a significant contribution to urban design discourse, particularly in the context of balancing modern regulations with traditional lifestyle patterns in historic urban areas.
