Courtyard House 39 Semi Terrace

Courtyard House 39 Semi Terrace is an innovative residential architectural project located in Gelugor, Penang, Malaysia, that masterfully addresses the common challenges faced by tropical terrace houses through thoughtful design interventions and spatial reorganization. This three-story semi-terrace dwelling, encompassing 250 square meters of built-up area, exemplifies a harmonious fusion of raw and modern design elements, establishing a sophisticated dialogue between natural lighting, materials, landscape, and architectural space. The design, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, features a complete transformation of the ground floor plan to achieve an open-concept living space enhanced by strategic architectural elements. Notable design features include artistically placed openings for natural cross-ventilation, a light well that channels varying patterns of natural illumination throughout the day, and the integration of sustainable materials such as timber, red bricks, and concrete. The interior spatial planning incorporates a dark wood cabinet serving as a partition, leading to a raw concrete platform complemented by red bricks and vent blocks, while a specially designed skylight creates dynamic lighting effects that evolve with the sun's movement. The dining area showcases raw wood-inspired furnishings illuminated by both modern fixtures and natural light from an adjacent pocket garden, demonstrating the project's success in creating a seamless connection between interior and exterior spaces. This thoughtful renovation, completed in January 2021, effectively addresses the typical constraints of Malaysian terrace houses by improving ventilation, maximizing natural daylight, and strengthening the connection with nature, ultimately creating a more sustainable and livable residential environment.
