Cotton Boll Private Lounge

Cotton Boll Private Lounge is an award-winning airport hospitality space located within Çukurova Airport in southern Turkey, representing a sophisticated synthesis of regional cultural heritage, contemporary interior design principles, and sustainable architectural practice. Designed by Ece Gülağaç and Özkan Gülağaç of Öge Mimarlık, Cotton Boll Private Lounge encompasses 765 square meters of enclosed space, including a 420 square meter main lounge area, a 205 square meter semi-open terrace, and a 140 square meter crew resting area, all meticulously conceived to transform the conventional airport transit experience into a refined cultural journey. The design draws profound inspiration from the Çukurova region's agricultural landscape, particularly its expansive cotton fields, as well as the area's rich tradition of handcrafted textiles and historical architectural heritage, translating these vernacular elements into a contemporary spatial vocabulary that honors local identity while meeting the functional demands of modern aviation infrastructure. The most distinctive architectural feature of Cotton Boll Private Lounge is its flowing ceiling structure, which reinterprets the linear texture of regional cotton fields through a curvilinear pattern that harmonizes with the airline's corporate identity concept of flow, achieved through the innovative application of natural cotton-derived textile fabrics suspended vertically alongside integrated flexible LED lighting strips that create a diffused, visually comfortable illumination while evoking the softness and luminosity of cotton's inherent whiteness. To circumvent fire regulation restrictions on fabric height while maintaining a sense of spatial expansiveness, the designers employed mirror-finish laminate panels on the ceiling surface, effectively doubling the perceived height of the vertical fabric elements and enhancing the overall sense of openness within the lounge environment. Additional design elements inspired by the morphology and texture of cotton bolls manifest as distinctive patterns integrated into illuminated panels positioned behind built-in seating niches, providing both aesthetic depth and ambient lighting that contributes to the space's welcoming atmosphere. The food and beverage service area features a monumental handcrafted mosaic panel measuring 7.60 meters by 1.60 meters, composed of 3,532 individually crafted hollow aluminum pieces that merge traditional motifs from local carpet weaving with historical mosaic textures characteristic of the Çukurova region, creating a dynamic interplay of glossy and matte surfaces that respond to user movement through constantly shifting light reflections, thereby imbuing the panel with a vibrant, ever-evolving character that serves as both artistic focal point and cultural narrative device. The design process, which spanned from February to August 2023 for conceptualization and documentation, followed by implementation from March to September 2024, confronted numerous challenges including the harmonious integration of Çukurova's deep-rooted historical and cultural identity with the pragmatic requirements of a high-traffic airport environment, necessitating extensive research into local craftsmanship, materials, and architectural heritage while simultaneously addressing sustainability concerns through the selection of natural and locally sourced materials that also met stringent durability, fire resistance, and light sensitivity standards mandated by aviation safety regulations. The spatial organization of Cotton Boll Private Lounge prioritizes intuitive passenger flow and ergonomic comfort, with thoughtfully arranged seating configurations that facilitate both individual relaxation and social interaction, while interactive elements inspired by local culture create an engaging sensory experience that reduces travel-related stress and enhances the overall journey quality. The project exemplifies a human-centered design approach that redefines the airport lounge typology by demonstrating how regional identity, sustainable material practices, and contemporary design innovation can converge to create spaces that transcend mere functional necessity, instead offering passengers a meaningful connection to place and culture during the liminal experience of air travel. Cotton Boll Private Lounge received the Golden A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2025, one of the world's most prestigious design competitions, with the jury recognizing the project's exceptional innovation, visionary approach, and outstanding execution that pushes the boundaries of interior design practice while delivering a solution that exceeds conventional expectations for airport hospitality environments. The award designation acknowledges Cotton Boll Private Lounge as a trendsetting, monumental work that exhibits strong technical attributes, brilliant artistic skill, unique innovations, and wondrous emotional elements that collectively advance the fields of interior design and architectural practice while creating intense feelings of desire and aesthetic fascination. The design's success lies in its ability to balance authenticity with functionality, tradition with modernity, and regional specificity with universal appeal, establishing a benchmark for culturally responsive airport design that demonstrates how thoughtful integration of local heritage can enhance rather than compromise the efficiency and comfort demanded by contemporary travel infrastructure, thereby contributing meaningfully to the ongoing discourse surrounding place-making, cultural sustainability, and experiential design within the context of global mobility networks.
