Cork Block Sofa is an innovative furniture design that represents a groundbreaking approach to sustainable seating solutions, combining ecological consciousness with modular functionality. Created by Portuguese designer Miguel Arruda, this distinctive piece emerged from the innovative use of recycled cork and polyurethane materials, consolidated through a sophisticated manufacturing process involving pressure and temperature treatment in metal molds. The design comprises a system of nine precisely cut blocks for single-seat configurations and thirteen blocks for double-seat arrangements, offering dimensions of 120 or 180 centimeters in width, 57 centimeters in height, and 90 centimeters in depth. The sofa's unique composition stems from a specialized agglomerate that achieves specific physical cohesion and elasticity properties, enabling effective adherence when blocks are overlapped. This innovative approach to furniture design earned recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, acknowledging its contribution to sustainable design practices. The sofa's distinctive feature lies in its adaptable nature, allowing users to experiment with various configurations while providing different comfort levels through strategic support points for the coccyx, back, and arms. The material's inherent physical and tactile qualities, combined with the option to incorporate upholstery solutions in various colors, create versatile ambient possibilities. Drawing inspiration from the sculptural volumetry of cork oak trees, the design successfully merges natural elements with technological innovation, representing a significant advancement in sustainable furniture design that began development in February 2018 and was completed in October 2020 in Lisbon.
