Coral Extinction Ring

Coral Extinction Ring is an innovative jewelry design series created by Sardonna Hin Ting Tsui that artistically represents the critical environmental issue of coral reef deterioration through three interconnected wearable pieces. This conceptual jewelry collection, which earned recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the 3D Printed Forms and Products Design category, combines sterling silver with Mitsumata tissue paper to create a powerful narrative about marine ecosystem degradation. The series consists of three distinct rings that progressively illustrate the stages of coral decline: the first ring depicts healthy coral reef systems with vibrant paper elements obscuring the silver structure, the second ring reveals partial skeletal exposure symbolizing the deterioration process, and the final ring displays the bare silver skeleton representing complete coral death. Each piece is meticulously crafted using advanced 3D modeling software (Rhinoceros), 3D printing technology, and traditional metalworking techniques, with dimensions ranging from 51-62mm in width and 69-98mm in height. The rings are designed to be worn on the interior of the hand, symbolically protecting these marine treasures, while their substantial size serves to draw attention to the urgent environmental message they convey. The innovative combination of precious metal and delicate paper elements creates a compelling visual metaphor for the fragility of marine ecosystems, while the technical execution demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of both traditional jewelry-making techniques and contemporary digital fabrication methods.
