Contra Vessels

Contra Vessels is an innovative collection of handcrafted vessels that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of contrasting elements through sophisticated material combinations and artistic craftsmanship. Designed by British designer Bem Robinson, these vessels represent a thoughtful exploration of dualities such as indoor-outdoor spaces, temperature contrasts, and light-dark relationships, manifested through the strategic use of premium materials including zebrano wood, alabaster, and ceramic resin composite. The collection, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design category, comprises a carefully proportioned set including a 180mm x 120mm carafe and accompanying mugs in two sizes. The distinctive design methodology involves initially turning a base material, either zebrano wood or alabaster, then deliberately introducing controlled imperfections through carving patterns or creating intentional fractures, which are subsequently filled with a ceramic resin composite. This innovative technique creates a compelling visual and tactile narrative that bridges the gap between natural and manufactured aesthetics. The vessels' unique properties stem from their ability to evoke outdoor experiences within interior spaces through thoughtful material selection, color combinations, and textural contrasts. The design process, which originated from extensive research involving focus groups and material studies, demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of emotional design and user interaction. The ceramic resin composite, developed through experimentation with ground porcelain and resin, represents a technical innovation in material bonding, eliminating the need for traditional adhesives while maintaining structural integrity. This award-winning design, completed in 2014, showcases an exceptional balance between aesthetic appeal, functional design, and innovative material application, contributing significantly to the evolution of contemporary tableware design.
