CONTemporary Library Exhibition Installation

CONTemporary Library Exhibition Installation is an innovative architectural intervention designed by Vladislav Kostadinov and team, transforming a historic 16th-century Turkish bath (hammam) into a dynamic contemporary art space. This silver A' Design Award-winning installation masterfully integrates modern design elements within a heritage structure, creating a temporary library dedicated exclusively to art books and multimedia resources. The installation, measuring 10 meters in width and depth with a height of 3 meters, occupies the main chamber of the former bath, utilizing the dramatic 13-meter-high domed space to create a compelling spatial narrative. The design employs natural construction-grade wood throughout, deliberately contrasting with the aged plaster, brick, and stone of the historic structure while providing a warm, inviting atmosphere. The centerpiece of the installation features a spiral, ladder-like element that visually connects the ground level to the dome, creating a metaphorical journey skyward. The functional aspects include carefully designed seating areas, bookcases, periodical shelves, and a computer station housing an extensive digital archive of contemporary artists. The installation's lighting scheme enhances both the contemporary additions and the historical architectural elements, highlighting the niches, arches, and brick dome of the original structure. This temporary intervention represents a significant achievement in adaptive reuse, successfully transforming a historic space into a contemporary cultural hub while maintaining respect for the original architecture. The project, completed in less than a week in October 2012, demonstrates exceptional spatial organization, material sensitivity, and innovative approach to exhibition design, earning recognition through the prestigious A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category.
