Conrad Botes
Conrad Botes is a South African artist recognized for his intricate drawings and progressive ideas. Born in 1976 in Johannesburg, Botes uses a range of styles to communicate his politically-minded commentary. His works are often humorous and display a deep awareness of everyday life in South Africa. He has exhibited his artwork around the world, including shows in his home country, North America, and Europe. His most iconic works include The New Backyard, which dealt with the effects of segregation and Apartheid, and A Dog and His Shadow, which depicted a black dog and his shadow in an abstract form. Botes also explored the idea of homogenous culture through his project Derai. Through a range of multimedia, he sought to create a dialogue between African and western culture. His works often explore themes of identity, race and the human condition, pushing the boundaries of creative expression.
