Connecting Sculpture Lingerie Store
Connecting Sculpture Lingerie Store is an award-winning interior space and exhibition design project that represents a sophisticated fusion of commercial retail architecture and brand narrative storytelling, completed in July 2023 in Taiwan. This approximately 148.7 square meter retail environment was conceived as a comprehensive renovation of a 25-32-year-old store, transforming it into a dual-brand display area that seamlessly integrates the established JIALI brand, founded in 1992, with its contemporary offshoot, Classy. The design methodology employed by Kun Yen Lu centers on the strategic removal of spatial partitions that previously segregated the original and new brand areas, thereby creating a continuous visual and experiential narrative that honors the company's three-decade heritage while simultaneously projecting a modernized corporate identity. The material palette demonstrates a deliberate juxtaposition of industrial and refined elements, incorporating galvanized angle steel, transparent glass, corrugated board, metal plates, stone paint, neon lights, acrylic, and Spanish bricks to establish textural depth and visual contrast. The left display area employs cool-toned colorful metals, while the right side features milky brown hues that extend into the dressing room, creating a soft, feminine atmosphere that aligns with the intimate nature of lingerie products. The central counter functions as a unifying architectural element, constructed with Spanish brick in a hollow design that symbolically bridges nostalgia with contemporary aesthetics, while glass and mirror elements represent the brand's modernization trajectory. The original JIALI display area utilizes galvanized steel frames as display cabinets, complemented by neon lighting that emphasizes the brand's localization and industrial wholesale origins, with movable display cabinets inspired by the stacked cardboard boxes characteristic of the company's earlier operational days. In contrast, the Classy brand area features sculptural curved elements that metaphorically represent the modern feminine form, with metal plates symbolizing the company's growth years and curved glass installations requiring custom fabrication to achieve the desired aesthetic effect. The design team confronted significant technical challenges, as each shelf required custom fabrication without ready-made templates, necessitating collaboration with acrylic factories and the development of specialized molds to integrate neon lights with angle steel while maintaining visual cleanliness through laser cutting technology that eliminated visible hardware such as suspenders and screws. The extensive use of acrylic throughout the original brand area serves to mitigate the visual intensity of saturated colors through transparency while maintaining spatial divisions created by large-area color blocks, functioning as a visual demarcation line between display zones. The gray tonal palette employed in both left and right brand display areas establishes a calm, professional ambiance that reflects the brand's industrial wholesale heritage, while brick walls in the central counter area pay homage to the old factory aesthetic. The design successfully transforms the retail space into a storytelling medium that facilitates customer engagement and digital marketing opportunities, allowing new customers to comprehend the brand's historical trajectory while enabling existing customers to connect with its renewed identity. The project's execution required careful coordination with store business hours, balancing functionality, durability, and aesthetic execution while managing the complexities of custom fabrication and installation. Connecting Sculpture Lingerie Store received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2025, a prestigious recognition that acknowledges designs distinguished by creativity, ingenuity, and professional execution, validating the project's successful integration of spatial planning, material innovation, and brand narrative architecture. The design exemplifies contemporary retail interior design principles that prioritize experiential continuity, material authenticity, and cultural resonance, demonstrating how commercial spaces can function as three-dimensional brand narratives that connect corporate heritage with contemporary market positioning while maintaining operational functionality and aesthetic sophistication.
