Command Z Visualising Book Layout is an innovative and thought-provoking book design project that explores the progressive stages of Alzheimer's disease through interactive visual storytelling, created by designer Jiayi Li. This sophisticated publication employs multiple sensory and interactive elements to metaphorically represent the deterioration of memory and cognitive function experienced by Alzheimer's patients. The book is strategically divided into three distinct stages - pre, mid, and post - corresponding to the progression of Alzheimer's disease, each utilizing unique design approaches and materials to convey the emotional and physical aspects of memory loss. In the early stage, the design incorporates delicate tracing paper to symbolize the vulnerability of individuals affected by the condition. The mid-stage features an innovative use of temperature-sensitive ink, where text becomes visible only through human touch, creating an engaging interaction between the reader and the content. The final stage employs deliberately burned paper elements, representing the irreversible nature of advanced Alzheimer's disease. This Bronze A' Design Award-winning work in the Social Design category stands out for its masterful combination of various production techniques, including variable temperature inks, blank pen marks achieved through pencil printing, Polaroid photographs, and the strategic use of fire as a design element. The project was inspired by a poignant love story of a Taiwanese couple affected by Alzheimer's disease, demonstrating how deep emotional connections can persist despite severe memory loss. The design successfully raises awareness about Alzheimer's disease while pushing the boundaries of traditional book design through its innovative use of materials and interactive elements.
