Cluster for The ISF Academy Social space for students is an innovative interior design project that transforms a conventional corridor area into a dynamic social environment for student interaction and engagement. This thoughtfully conceived space combines curved sofa benches with existing rectangular portals to create diverse social settings, enhanced by 49 custom-made fibreglass reflector lampshades that provide ambient illumination and naturally segment the space into distinct activity zones. The design draws inspiration from literary themes of imagination and discovery, particularly referencing the concept of portals as gateways to new experiences. The project's technical execution showcases sophisticated design elements, including CNC-milled patterns derived from school symbolism, integrated into the portal walls. The lighting system, featuring precisely engineered 1500mm x 950mm x 150mm fiberglass reflectors, creates a carefully modulated atmosphere that supports various social activities. Completed in 2014 through a rapid 60-day construction period, the project demonstrates excellence in both aesthetic and functional design, earning recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category. The space's success lies in its careful consideration of student behavior patterns, acoustic requirements, and spatial constraints, while maintaining a balance between practical functionality and artistic expression. The implementation of custom graphics, developed in collaboration with design specialists, transforms the space's identity through five unique patterns derived from Chinese characters, creating a culturally resonant environment that encourages student interaction and social engagement.
