City Inn Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley Hotel is an innovative interior design project that masterfully blends historical elements with contemporary aesthetics in a 4,742-square-meter space located near the historic Kuanzhai Alley in Chengdu, China. Designed by Chief Designer Chihkang Chu, this hospitality project transforms the conventional hotel experience into a modern art gallery concept through its distinctive monochromatic design approach. The interior design scheme employs a sophisticated black-and-white color palette throughout, featuring retro-style furniture and striking street view photographs that create an immersive environment where guests become the sole colorful elements within what appears to be a three-dimensional photograph. The design overcomes budget constraints through creative solutions such as strategic mirror placement to enhance spatial perception and floor-to-ceiling windows that incorporate natural light filtered through bamboo plants, reflecting traditional Sichuan architectural elements. The lobby showcases carefully curated historical artifacts and photographs as art installations, elevating everyday objects into artistic pieces that bridge the past and present. This innovative approach to hospitality design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category in 2017, successfully creates an engaging narrative that allows guests to experience local history in a contemporary context while providing numerous photogenic opportunities that naturally encourage social media sharing, effectively combining cultural preservation with modern marketing strategies.
