Circle Origin Source Public Art
Circle Origin Source Public Art is a culturally significant public installation created by designer Pavavalung Etan, situated in Majia Township, Pingtung County, Taiwan, that serves as a powerful symbol of resilience and cultural unity for the relocated aboriginal tribes of Majia, Haocha, and Dashe following the devastating Morakot typhoon of 2009. This comprehensive architectural intervention spans approximately 16 square meters and incorporates multiple design elements including a circular plaza with inlaid totems, creative railings combining wood, stone, and iron, and decorative columns at the Tourism Service Center entrance. The design's conceptual foundation draws from aboriginal life origins and shared tribal cultural elements, manifesting through concentric circles that symbolically represent four essential totem concepts. The installation employs a sophisticated material palette including original stone, copper, stainless steel, and brick, creating a durable structure that harmoniously integrates with its environment. The artistic composition features carefully selected color symbolism, with blue representing the sea, green symbolizing mountains, and golden orange reflecting the sun, all interwoven within the public space where community members gather. The work, which was completed in December 2019, demonstrates exceptional integration of cultural heritage with contemporary design principles, earning recognition with an Iron A' Design Award in the Landscape Planning and Garden Design category for its innovative approach to cultural preservation and community healing through public art. The installation serves multiple functions beyond its aesthetic value, acting as a gathering space for ceremonies, cultural events, and daily community interaction, while its thoughtful design elements create an intimate visual experience that strengthens community bonds and preserves tribal heritage for future generations.
