Circe Sculptural Pavilion
Circe Sculptural Pavilion is an innovative architectural installation that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of parametric design and mythological narrative, created by architect DaeWha Kang. This floating pavilion, named after the enchanting witch from Greek mythology, serves as both a sculptural artwork and functional resting space on Möhnesee Lake in Germany. The structure's most distinctive feature is its transformative nature, achieved through the precise arrangement of 278 identical pieces of spruce timber, each measuring 40 by 140 by 2400 millimeters, that create an intricate interplay between organic and geometric forms. The pavilion demonstrates remarkable versatility in its visual presentation, appearing as a solid disc when viewed head-on while revealing an ethereal, transparent quality from oblique angles. This sophisticated architectural work employs advanced parametric design principles to establish a systematic approach to form-finding and documentation, enabling efficient construction through standardized yet unique processes. The structure's construction methodology, involving the strategic shifting, rotating, and fixing of standard spruce components, allowed for rapid assembly by local craftsmen in just five days. The pavilion's design excellence was recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to spatial design, material utilization, and cultural narrative. As a floating structure, it responds dynamically to water movements, inviting visitors to interact with it as both a sculptural object and functional platform for recreation, offering spaces for climbing, shade-seeking, and water activities.
