Cilindro Desk is an innovative furniture design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of architectural inspiration and functional workspace solutions. Created by Portuguese designer Miguel Arruda, this versatile piece draws its conceptual foundation from classical architectural elements, specifically the column, translating this timeless form into a contemporary workstation. The design consists of two articulating semi-cylinders, measuring 500mm in diameter and 890mm in height, with one half serving as a storage container while the other transforms into a functional workspace through an ingenious folding mechanism. The work surface, positioned at an ergonomic height of 720mm, features dimensions of 620 x 447mm and is supported by a telescopic tubular leg that elegantly folds away when not in use. The desk's construction employs curved MDF panels with laminated surfaces, complemented by melamine shelving and anti-shock PVC tops, while the supporting structure utilizes epoxy polyester powder-coated steel. This environmentally conscious design incorporates 60 percent recycled materials, with the wood components containing 70 percent recycled content, and features zero VOC emissions paint. The desk's cylindrical form, devoid of sharp edges, enables seamless integration into various spatial contexts, while its mobility is facilitated by six wheels that allow the 30.5kg structure to be easily repositioned. Recognized for its innovative approach to addressing the evolving needs of home-based work environments, the Cilindro Desk received the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category, acknowledging its contribution to contemporary workplace solutions.
