Chrysalis Outdoor Kitchen is an innovative outdoor culinary installation that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of raw natural materials with refined functionality. Designed by Irene Goldberg, this monumental piece draws inspiration from the transformative nature of stone quarrying and the metamorphic symbolism of a chrysalis. The kitchen spans an impressive 519 centimeters in length, with a depth of 60 centimeters and height of 92 centimeters, crafted entirely from a single slab of Becagli Travertine sourced from the Cipressi Quarry. The design comprises five distinct functional segments, each dedicated to specific culinary purposes including a sink, grill, refrigerator, cooking hob, and sideboard, collectively weighing approximately 3000 kilograms. The deliberate preservation of the stone's natural characteristics in conjunction with refined finishing techniques creates a compelling narrative of transformation, much like its namesake chrysalis. Each component maintains the inherent beauty of the raw travertine while being meticulously hand-finished to achieve practical functionality. This exceptional blend of natural aesthetics and culinary utility earned the design a Bronze A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category, recognizing its innovative approach to outdoor living spaces. The design's significance lies in its ability to challenge conventional outdoor kitchen aesthetics while maintaining a deep connection to the natural origins of its primary material.
