Childhood Residential

Childhood Residential is an award-winning interior design project that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of modern aesthetics with nostalgic elements, created by designer Yi-Ling Syu in New Taipei City, Taiwan. This innovative residential space transformation encompasses 36 ping (approximately 119 square meters) and masterfully combines two household units into a cohesive living environment featuring four bedrooms, two living rooms, and two bathrooms. The design's distinctive character emerges through its sophisticated material palette, incorporating Italian grey terrazzo flooring, pebble-like artistic wall treatments, and a white rustic stone television wall that establishes a contemporary grey-white color scheme. The project's conceptual foundation draws inspiration from childhood memories, departing from conventional Northern European or industrial styles by implementing terrazzo and stone materials for primary surfaces, complemented by wooden furniture and vintage-inspired decorative elements. Notable design solutions include the Italian handmade terrazzo entryway wall with integrated wooden bike storage, demonstrating both functional innovation and aesthetic consideration. The space planning prioritizes safety and flexibility, with thoughtfully positioned cabinets in areas with minimal natural light exposure and a sophisticated electrical system concealed within hollow-wall cabinets. The design earned recognition through the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its excellence in spatial innovation, material selection, and functional layout. The project successfully overcomes structural challenges posed by immovable walls and existing circuitry, creating an unrestricted living environment that caters to a family with three young children and a pet, while maintaining a delicate balance between practical durability and aesthetic refinement.
