Chiesa Diruta Concert Hall and Library is an innovative architectural transformation project that reimagines a ruined Renaissance church in Grottole, Italy, into a dynamic cultural center. This Silver A' Design Award-winning design seamlessly integrates contemporary functionality with historical preservation, featuring a floating concert hall volume suspended 7 meters above ground level, allowing visitors to experience the original monument and enjoy panoramic views of the Basento river valley. The design employs a 60mm thick polycarbonate sheet wall system that creates a translucent, modern intervention while respecting the original stone structure's integrity. The complex houses dual functions: a concert hall and a municipal library, connected via a northern pathway. The concert hall's innovative floating design preserves the ground-level spatial experience of the original church, while the two-story municipal library provides a welcoming community space. Notable architectural features include maple parquet flooring, white marble in the foyer, and a sophisticated structural system utilizing metallic grids and aluminum casements. The design's nighttime illumination transforms the structure into a regional landmark, with the translucent concert hall volume emanating a gentle, warm glow. The project, completed between December 2020 and March 2021, demonstrates exceptional sensitivity to historical context while incorporating modern amenities such as elevators, dressing rooms, a gift shop, and a bar, all designed to enhance accessibility and cultural engagement.
