Chengdu Dachuan Lane Art Installation Public Art Space

Chengdu Dachuan Lane Art Installation Public Art Space is a significant urban renewal project and public art installation located on the West Bank of Jinjiang River in Chengdu, China, designed by Yingjie Lin and Yuanyuan Zhang to revitalize a historical street connecting the ruins of Chengdu East Gate City wall. This innovative architectural intervention, completed in June 2019, masterfully integrates historical preservation with contemporary artistic expression through a sophisticated structural installation spanning 140 meters. The installation employs precisely engineered 8mm diameter stainless steel copper-plated solid tubes, arranged in modular dislocation welding patterns to create a visually striking gateway that honors the street's historical significance while establishing a new cultural landmark. The design incorporates traditional elements such as black bricks and stone slabs characteristic of local street architecture, seamlessly blending historical authenticity with modern aesthetic sensibilities. The installation serves as a dynamic medium for storytelling and cultural preservation, transforming what was once a busy express street into an interactive public space that encourages pedestrian engagement and contemplation. The project, which earned a Silver A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in its approach to urban memory preservation through its careful consideration of spatial relationships, material selection, and cultural narrative. The installation's unique structural composition creates an immersive environment that blurs traditional boundaries between architectural space and public art, offering visitors a contemplative journey through time while maintaining essential traffic functionality. This harmonious integration of historical elements with contemporary design principles establishes a new paradigm for urban renewal projects that prioritize cultural preservation alongside modern utility.
