Chaxiang Siyi Tea is an innovative packaging design project that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional Chinese tea culture with contemporary design aesthetics. This sophisticated tea packaging system, designed by Qi-Jun Wang and team in 2019, pays homage to the historical significance of Xiang tea, which served as a tribute tea in ancient China and marked the origin of the tea horse road. The design encompasses four distinct varieties of tea from Hunan Province: Anhua black tea, Xiangxi yellow tea, Wuling black tea, and Chenzhou gounaogong tea, each represented through meticulously crafted landscape illustrations that capture the unique geographical and cultural characteristics of their respective origins. The packaging's structural design features a square box with a heaven-and-earth cover configuration, utilizing environmentally conscious recycled paper materials. The exterior showcases hot-pressed characters while the interior employs screen-printed illustrations, creating a sophisticated visual narrative that embodies the concept of tasting nature and drinking the landscape. Measuring 28cm in length, 28cm in width, and 8cm in height, the design masterfully incorporates traditional Chinese painting techniques with modern compositional elements, achieving a delicate balance between form and function. The project, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, demonstrates exceptional innovation in its approach to cultural preservation and sustainable design practices, effectively communicating both the product's heritage and its contemporary relevance through its thoughtful integration of black and white aesthetics with strategic use of color accents on the inner boxes.
