Charles Hinman

Charles Hinman (b. 1932) is an American artist known for his abstract sculpture and painting practice. His works, which often incorporate industrial materials, reflect his mastery of optical illusions. He is best known for his three-dimensional shaped canvases, called 'structurals', which he created in the 1960s. The surfaces of these canvases are usually painted in bright, vibrant hues and their edges are cut into geometric shapes. One important example of his work is his 1965 painting, 'Red, Blue, and Yellow'. This painting features a combination of classic abstract painting techniques and innovative shapes that suggest a new kind of spatial organization. Other important works by Hinman include 'Yellow and Blue', 'Orange and Green', and the 'Red and Green'. Hinman's works have been exhibited internationally, and he is regarded as an important figure in the development of postwar American abstraction.
