Celestial Light Private Residence
Celestial Light Private residence is an innovative architectural masterpiece that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of Japanese design principles with contemporary spatial concepts. Located in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, this single-story dwelling was meticulously designed on a 9.1-meter square footprint, adhering to traditional Japanese modular dimensions of 910 millimeters for timber structures. The residence's most distinctive feature is its sophisticated approach to natural illumination, achieved through four strategically placed tall windows at each corner that extend above the roofline, creating a unique Four Ears silhouette against the sky. The design brilliantly resolves the paradoxical requirement of maintaining privacy while maximizing natural light penetration. The interior layout draws inspiration from the traditional 4.5 tatami mat Japanese tea room arrangement, incorporating two protruding boxes that house a wet cell and a tatami room. The structure employs an environmentally conscious design approach, featuring timber construction with engineered wood rafters, exterior woodfiber insulation, and Japanese cedar slats. The 87.8-square-meter living space showcases exceptional attention to passive energy efficiency, with carefully calculated glass-to-facade ratio of 8.74% for optimal thermal performance. The open-plan interior allows for flexible zoning while maintaining visual connection to all four light-catching windows, creating an atmosphere of spatial fluidity and natural illumination. The project, completed in 2015, was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category, recognizing its innovative approach to residential architecture and its thoughtful integration of cultural elements with modern sustainable design principles.
