Celeste Pavilion
Celeste Pavilion is an innovative architectural installation that masterfully combines traditional Chinese pottery craftsmanship with contemporary urban design, created to revitalize a neglected street corner in Lishui, China. Completed in January 2020, this remarkable structure stands 4.5 meters tall and occupies 10 square meters, employing a distinctive kiln-shaped design that pays homage to the region's rich ceramic heritage. The pavilion's most notable feature is its sophisticated use of 2,500 custom-made glazed sintered bricks, each uniquely fired to achieve varying celadon glaze effects, creating a mesmerizing exterior that references the area's historical connection to pottery production. The structure utilizes the traditional corbel dome technique, an ancient architectural method commonly found in historical pagoda construction, demonstrating a seamless fusion of historical building practices with modern architectural innovation. At night, the pavilion transforms into a luminous sculpture when light filters through the strategically placed gaps between bricks, creating an ethereal effect reminiscent of a traditional pottery kiln's inner glow. This cultural installation, designed by Min Zhuo and awarded the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in the Cultural Heritage and Culture Industry Design category, serves multiple purposes: it prevents unauthorized parking, provides a contemplative public space, and most importantly, serves as a powerful reminder of the area's cultural heritage in pottery making. The pavilion's innovative design approach, which required extensive material research and structural experimentation, has successfully created a meaningful cultural landmark that enhances urban space while preserving and celebrating local artistic traditions.
