Cedar Sushi Package is an innovative culinary packaging design that exemplifies the harmonious fusion of traditional Japanese gastronomy with sustainable local materials and cultural preservation. This distinctive packaging concept, created by designer Shigeki Kunimatsu, features mackerel sushi wrapped in thinly sliced cedar wood, presented in a locally crafted cedar box that pays homage to the rich history of Keihoku, a region in northern Kyoto, Japan. The design, which earned a Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category, represents a sophisticated solution to regional economic challenges by connecting traditional forestry with culinary arts. The package's dimensions of 930mm x 211mm x 520mm accommodate both the preserved food product and its cultural narrative, incorporating decorative elements such as fish-themed paper artwork and cedar leaf embellishments. The design's significance extends beyond its immediate function, serving as a catalyst for community revitalization by creating meaningful collaborations between local forestry workers and culinary artisans. This packaging solution not only preserves the historical significance of mackerel's journey from the seaside to Kyoto via the Keihoku path but also embodies sustainable design principles through its use of natural, locally-sourced materials.
