Cave Residential House

Cave Residential House is an innovative residential interior design project completed in January 2023 in Tainan City, Taiwan, that reimagines living spaces through a primitive architectural lens, drawing inspiration from cave dwellings. Designed by Lucia Yao and Vader Wu, this 152-square-meter residence represents a sophisticated interpretation of natural cave formations, featuring flowing curves and winding pathways that create an immersive exploration experience. The design deliberately breaks away from conventional rectangular layouts, instead embracing organic forms and curved surfaces that guide movement throughout the space. The interior employs an extensive palette of gray shades, creating a serene atmosphere enhanced by carefully controlled lighting that produces subtle shadows and diffused illumination. The space encompasses an entrance, living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom, three bathrooms, and a distinctive tea room that embodies traditional Japanese ceremonial aesthetics. Notable features include a three-dimensional circular vista carved into the painted wall at the entrance, a multifunctional three-meter-long central table, and ripple-like circular elements that serve both aesthetic and practical purposes, including scent diffusion. The materiality of the project combines natural teak, titanium-plated stainless steel, Japanese spruce solid wood, Malaysian teak, and natural rush tatami, creating a harmonious blend of textures and surfaces. The design received recognition with a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category, acknowledging its innovative approach to residential architecture and its successful integration of art, functionality, and cultural elements. The project's unique features include dedicated spaces for flower arrangements and wine tasting, while the secluded tea room, incorporating traditional elements such as shoji doors and tatami flooring, provides a meditative retreat that emphasizes the connection between primitive architecture and contemporary living.
