Cava Light Installation

Cava Light Installation

Cava Light Installation is an innovative parametric lighting design that merges mathematical precision with natural cave formations, created by designer Yingri Guan. This sophisticated artistic installation transforms complex geological data into visually striking three-dimensional light sculptures through computational design methodologies. The design process involves analyzing cave mineral structural formation angles and composition data to generate vector images, which are then precisely etched onto acrylic glass using laser cutting technology. The installation, measuring 228 mm in width, 62 mm in depth, and 508 mm in height, incorporates LED lighting elements to create an ethereal illuminated presence. This groundbreaking work, which earned the Bronze A' Design Award in the Generative, Algorithmic, Parametric and AI-Assisted Design category, represents a harmonious fusion of natural phenomena and technological innovation. The design's unique approach to abstracting naturally occurring cave patterns into mathematical formulas demonstrates advanced problem-solving in computational design, while its versatile installation options make it suitable for various interior spaces. The six-month development process, conducted in the San Francisco Bay Area, involved extensive research including physical cave exploration and mathematical modeling, resulting in a design that effectively captures the organic, iterative nature of cave formation processes while maintaining aesthetic sophistication and functional practicality.
