Catchers’ Masks
Catchers' masks are protective gear worn by baseball and softball catchers to prevent injury to the face and head. The mask consists of a hard plastic shell that covers the entire face, with a metal cage over the front to protect the eyes and nose. The mask is attached to the catcher's head with straps that go around the back of the head and under the chin. The use of catchers' masks became widespread in the late 19th century, as baseball became more popular and the need for protective gear became apparent. Prior to the invention of the mask, catchers would often use makeshift protection such as a piece of leather or a wire cage. However, these were often inadequate and did not provide sufficient protection. Today, catchers' masks are an essential piece of equipment for catchers at all levels of play. They are designed to absorb the impact of a fast-moving ball, which can travel at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. The mask also protects the catcher from foul balls, which can be hit in any direction and can cause serious injury if they strike the catcher's face. In addition to the metal cage, catchers' masks often have additional padding around the forehead, cheeks, and jaw to provide extra protection and reduce the risk of injury. Some masks also have a removable chin guard that can be attached for additional protection. Overall, catchers' masks are an essential piece of equipment for any catcher, and are designed to provide maximum protection while allowing the catcher to move freely and perform their duties behind the plate.
